Welcome to the Togakushi Access Guide. Getting to Togakushi from Tokyo, Nagano and other major Japanese cities is quite straightforward via bus, train, taxi or shuttle.
Where is Togakushi?
Togakushi is located in the North-Western corner of Nagano Prefecture in central Honshu Island, Japan. The area is easily accessed from both airports in Tokyo (Narita & Haneda) by shinkansen (bullet train), airport shuttle (to Nagano), taxi, rental car or bus, as well as from Kyoto, Osaka and Nagoya.
How long to get to Togakushi?
The total travel time from Tokyo to Togakushi is usually between 3-4 hours via shinkansen bullet train & local bus, or around 5 hours via private direct transfer. There are also several options from the airports in Nagoya and Osaka (Kansai). This usually takes between 5-6 hours.

Take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano
Route: From Tokyo Station, take the Hokuriku or Nagano Shinkansen to Nagano Station.
Duration: About 1.5 hours.
Cost: Around ¥8,500 (one way, non-reserved seat).
2. From Nagano to Togakushi
Exit via the Zenkoji Exit (see map below) and take the local or express bus from Nagano Station to Togakushi Shrine
Local route: From Nagano Station, take the Alpico Bus #70 bound for Togakushi.
Please board the bus from bus stop no. 7 near Nagano station Zenkoji exit. The bus stop is in front of the Alpico Bus Ticket Office. (Google Map)
Duration: Around 1 hour.
Cost: Around ¥1,400 yen (non reserved, pay in exact cash). Or buy a ticket beforehand (see video).
Alternatively you can pre-book and catch the express bus service (see timetable here) which costs ¥2,000-¥2,500. It also leaves from Stop 7.
Note: The bus stops at several points near the shrine complex (see map below). The shrine is split into 3 main parts: Lower Shrine (Hokosha), Middle Shrine (Chusha), and Upper Shrine (Okusha). Choose the right bus stop depending on which part of the shrine you want to visit first.

Private Transfer to Togakushi
For larger groups we can organise a taxi van direct to/from your hotel to/from Tokyo, Narita, Haneda or Nagano Station. Other destinations in Nagano by request.
A chartered direct service to/from airport/hotel is usually ¥120,000-¥149,000 each way for a group of up to 7-8 with luggage. For Nagano it is around ¥35,000 for the same size group.
Transit time to Togakushi from Tokyo/Airports for all these services is approximately 4.5-6 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.
