About Togakushi Village

Just one hour from Nagano City, Togakushi is famous for its natural beauty, deep history and spiritual significance. With a shrine in a sacred forest, a long fascinating history, soba noodles famous throughout Japan, and the call of ninja intrigue, the village is yet another of Nagano’s “unknown” destinations.

Quite inaccessible until modern times, for hundreds of years Mt. Togakushi was a haven of esoteric Buddhist practice, frequented by mountain ascetics. It is also a place of dramatic seasonal change experiencing heavy snowfall in winter, bursting into verdant forests and wild flowers through spring and summer, before turning slowly into a dazzling mosaic of gold, amber, and red colours in autumn.

Surrounded by lush mountains Togakushi Village offers something for everyone with kid-friendly ninja parks, a ski field, history museums, soba making schools, hiking trails, flower fields plus much more. The undisputed highlight, however, is the hike along a path lined with towering cryptomeria trees to the Togakushi Shrine in the foothills of Mount Togakushi.

Eating Out in Togakushi Village

Places to eat in Togakushi

Togakushi Village is famous for its soba (buckwheat noodles), local seasonal food, cafés and a few unique restaurants. Many places are nestled around the shrine paths and Chūsha/Okusha areas — perfect for combining food with sightseeing.

Classic Local Cuisine & Soba Restaurants

Togakushi is especially famous for soba noodles — often served traditional bocchi-mori style with five portions — and many of these shops use locally grown buckwheat. These include:

Soba no Mi – Beloved local soba restaurant near Chūsha; great classic Nagano buckwheat noodles.

Uzuraya – Popular soba noodle shop with strong local reputation.

Togakushido – Well-reviewed soba restaurant offering hearty traditional noodle dishes.

Okusha‑mae Naosuke – Great spot right by the Okusha approach — soba, tempura and snacks.

Okusha no Chaya – Casual soba and simple meals near the upper shrine area.

Note that many soba places in Togakushi operate mainly for lunch and may close by mid-afternoon, especially outside the peak tourist seasons — planning meals earlier in the day is recommended.

Other Dining Options & Cafés

Kotorinomori – Italian restaurant with pasta and pizza — a nice change if you want Western food.

Alpine Dining やなぎらん – At the ski area with views, raclettes and hearty alpine fare.

Lamp Cafe – Cozy café perfect for coffee/tea and light snacks.

Coffee Tea House Jurin (珈琲茶館 十輪) – Classic coffee house near Chūsha ideal for a break.

Seasonal & Local Specialties

In winter and festival seasons, local eateries offer seasonal menus and unique dishes such as
忍者丼 (Ninja Donburi) — meat miso bowl featuring local garlic and ginger at some ski area spots. Mushroom soba or hearty stews during colder months.

Snacks & Sweet Treats

Along with soba, Togakushi has food stalls and small cafés selling mochi and rice-based sweets, as well as soba-flavored desserts like dango or ice cream during festivals.

Dining with a View / Relaxed Meals

Some lodges and local hotels around Togakushi offer seasonal multi-course meals featuring local vegetables, mountain herbs, and regional specialties — ideal if you’re staying overnight.

Togakushi Village Information

Things to do

Togakushi offers a spiritual and natural retreat. Activities include hiking to the five Togakushi Shrines, famously connected by a towering 400-year-old cedar path. Visitors can explore Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond), enjoy skiing in winter, or visit the Ninja Village and Folk Museum. It is a serene destination for hiking, snowshoeing, and exploring history.

Getting here

Access to the area from Tokyo, Nagano and other major cities via shuttle or public transport is straightforward. It usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by a combination of bullet train from Tokyo and bus from Nagano. However there are many ways to access the area, including bus, car and private shuttle. Go to our access page to find out the various options to get to Togakushi.

Places to Visit

Nagano City has relatively fewer attractions than some of the more famous Japanese tourist meccas. However, the city’s prime location amongst the Japan Alps helps provide a unique variety of sites with historical, cultural and natural characteristics that is hard to match elsewhere in the country.

A visit to the Nagano area would not be complete without seeing the Japan Snow Monkeys in Jigokudani Monkey Park (地獄谷野猿公苑 Jigokudani Yaen Kōen) in Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture. It is a popular day trip from Nagano and Togakushi. Local hotels can often organise taxis/drivers for their guests.

Mount Madarao and Iiyama City are located deep within the Japan Alps, making the area an excellent retreat during any of the four seasons. Here you can experience “ancient” Japan by visiting the many remaining temples or just by viewing its traditional landscapes that are spread across the region.

There are many things to do in Joetsu City during your stay in the region. From cycling along the Japan Sea, to vineyards, sandy beaches, a ski museum, different Joetsu events, cherry blossom viewing in Takada Park, soaking in the local onsen as well as lots of shopping therapy! Just a one hour drive.

Matsumoto Castle is Japan’s oldest castle. It also known as the “Crow Castle” (烏城 Karasu-jo) because of its black exterior. Matsumoto Castle is the oldest existing castle in Japan and one of Japan’s premier historic castles. It is about 60-70 minutes drive from Togakushi Village

Nojiri Lake is an ancient glacial lake – Nagano’s second largest. It is perfectly placed in the mountains of Joshinetsu Kogen NP, offering the perfect summer escape for lovers of the great outdoors. Nojiri remains unmarred by unsightly developments with an old-fashioned rustic charm.

Myoko Kogen (Myoko Highlands) is just a short thirty minute drive from Togakushi in neighbouring Niigata Prefecture. It is the home of several ski resorts, onsen hot springs and (during winter) a lively ski resort village in Akakura Onsen. It can also be accessed by train from Nagano.

Nozawa Onsen is a charming hot spring village just 45 minutes from Nojiriko. The village is said to date back to 8th century but has been renowned for it’s hot springs and traditional inns since the Edo period. Today it is also renowned for it’s powder snow experience.

Togakushi Car Rental

With your own wheels, it’s great to explore and see some of the sights, do some shopping or find a hidden onsen. Plus Togakushi car rental can also be an economical choice if you are travelling in a group. Unfortunately there are no local rental car options for foreign visitors in the local Togakushi area, but there are many options close to Nagano Station.

History of Togakushi

Togakushi boasts a history rooted in ancient Shinto mythology and mountain asceticism. According to legend, the dramatic Mt. Togakushi formed when a deity threw away the stone door of a celestial cave, making the area a “hidden door” (Togakushi). For over 1,000 years, the five Togakushi Shrines have been a major center for Shugendo, a religion combining mountain worship and ascetic practices.

Mythological Origin: The area is tied to the tale of the sun goddess Amaterasu hiding in a cave. When she emerged, the god Tajikarao-no-mikoto threw the heavy stone door, which landed in Nagano, creating the mountain range.

Shrine History: The shrines—Lower, Middle, and Upper—were originally established to worship deities associated with water, agriculture, and mountain worship.

Asceticism (Shugendo): By the Heian period, Togakushi became a renowned site for ascetics training in the mountains.

Cultural Significance: The 2km path to the Upper Shrine (Okusha), lined with ancient cedar trees, serves as a pilgrimage site and popular hiking destination.

Today, the village is an increasingly popular tourist site for inbound tourists with many cultural, historical, outdoor and family activities
